If search stops working in your SharePoint environment then try searching for
contentclass:"STS_web" or
contentclass:"STS_ListItem".
The search results should give the results at the site level or list item level. If you do get results, then search is working but maybe it hasn't crawled your content but if you don't get any results then you may have to force the crawl to work properly (in case of SharePoint Online, call Microsoft)
